Hand tremor is a common complaint and can have many causes. Determining the characteristics of the tremor is the first step toward the right approach.
Causes of hand tremor may include fatigue, anxiety, certain medications, thyroid problems and neurological conditions. When the tremor appears (at rest or with movement) is an important clue.
A neurological evaluation is recommended for tremor that is new, gradually increasing or making daily life difficult. If there is accompanying slowness and stiffness, the evaluation is even more important.
The type of tremor is determined through examination and, when needed, additional tests, and an individual follow-up plan is created.
